Meet Mike Johnson #64285
How long have you been playing disc golf?
Who took you to play disc golf / how did you discover the game?
My previous employer installed a short 9 hole course and we would go play during lunch time.
How would you describe your playing style?
Aggressive, looking for big shots with a pretty good approach game.
How long had you played before you entered your first tournament?
How do you mentally prepare for a tournament?
I practice the course, so I know what the shots look like ahead of time which helps me with disc selection. Beyond that I try not to think about the tournament too much as playing without thinking leads to my best golf.
If you could have the power to make a new rule or change an existing one, what would it be?
I would make mandos only for directing shots away from danger and not for circus shots.
What is your favorite disc golf memory so far?
Placing second in Ching and Zing at Zebulon Disc Golf Course in Rec. It was my first tournament and it had me hooked. I knew I could get better and seeing people like Barry Schultz shred that course was awe inspiring.
What brand(s) do you throw? Why?
Trilogy. When I learned to play it was based mostly on the brand new at the time Disc Golf Answer Man podcast. I have listened to every single podcast they have put out to this day. They are inspiring and so helpful. They recommended discs and I went and tried them. The amount of giveback they provide to the community tells me I made the right choice.
What advice do you most often give a beginner?
Disc down and slow down. Throwing fast discs will create bad habits and not provide you with what you think it will, and slowing down your throws leads to smooth and far.
Finish this sentence. 'Disc Golf is ....."
where my family away from home resides.
What is your current disc golf goal?
To be consistent enough to be competitive in Open Masters. Ratings wise I would be happy being 960 as I feel like that is a pretty achievable goal. I always want to help people with advice if they are seeking it as well. Helping people improve their game is amazing when you see them get it right.
Edit from Fly Guy: Full disclosure - you may recognize Mike's name - he's the Founder and original owner of Fly Guy Disc Golf. He transferred ownership of Fly Guy Disc Golf to Hannable McGarity in Fall of 2018. - HP
